3 days in Iceland - Golden circle, Thingvellir national park, Gullfoss waterfall (1st day)
I arrived with 3 friends on a Saturday evening to Iceland airport in February. The first step was to rent a car for our icecold winter adventure. I reccomend you to rent a car, because without it you are a lost person in Iceland. If you don’t rent a car, there are organized tours but they aren’t so flexible.
To rent a car is quite simple but there is an interesting point with the car insurance. We took out insurance, which insures for compulsory coverages except wind damage. We didn't understand why but later on the "secret" was out. And there was another thing: in the winter is better to rent a 4x4 SUV.
So back to the story, we drove to Reykjavík. It took about an hour by car from the airport. We checked in to our hotel and had a simple dinner: fish and chips. So nothing fancy.
Next morning, we wanted to drive around the Golden circle. That is the most popular tourist route in the country. It started from and finished also in Reykjavík.
On this day our first destionation was the Thingvellir national park. It is one of the most popular places of Iceland. There was a first democratic parliament of Iceland established in the year 930 here. You can find here also the Lögberg law rock, the Thingvallakirkja church and the amazing Thingvellir rift where you can walk between two continents. Yes, it’s true. You can walk between the borders of North-America and Europe. You can find here another sight the Öxarárfoss waterfall. This waterfall is not so big, but in the winter it’s wonderful. See the pictures below.
Our second stop was at the Strokkur geysir. The Strokkur geysir is the little sister of the Great geysir. This geysir is also a famous hot spring in the geothermal area of the Haukadalur valley.
Our last destination was the Gullfoss waterfall on this day. The Gullfoss waterfall is one of the most iconic waterfalls of Iceland. It was breathtaking but when we arrived to the waterfall the weather was so cold, freezing and so windy that we only could enjoy the view for few minutes.
